About my photography
I don't mind when pictures are extensively manipulated, but my style is to stay true to the subject. My pictures are optimized for and look best when ambient light is low. This is especially true if you have a CRT monitor because CRT-monitors cannot display dark tones when ambient light is strong. This fact does not mean that you should be unhappy if you have a CRT-monitor. In a dark environment CRT-monitors are far better than the thin LCD-monitors.
Other photographers have been a great inspiration to me. My favorite photo sharing sites are pbase.com (favorite: FrancisToussaint) and betterphoto.com (favorite: Ursula I. Abresch).
Is your monitor calibrated?

Can you see all the rectangles and does the gray scale appear neutral gray? If not, your monitor should be calibrated. Hit F11 on your keyboard to hide the tool bars and have a closer look on the darker rectangles. (Hit F11 again to get back to normal view.) To calibrate your monitor go to my Monitor calibration page for a guide on visual monitor calibration.
