Welcome to my small gardens

I got my first plot in 1997 in Saltsjobaden near Stockholm in Sweden. My intention was to grow food plants for butterflies. I'm an ecologist and was doing research on the evolution of food plant preferences in these insects. I used organic methods of cultivation because I wanted to simulate a natural environment. Very soon it turned out that organic vegetable gardening was much more interesting to me than growing the weeds that my butterflies preferred. The research project had to move elsewhere.

In 2001 the plot in Saltsjobaden was 140 m2. I used about 60 for vegetables. In this small space I produced nearly all the vegetables that my family of four consumed during the year (245 kg). In the spring of 2002 I moved from Saltsjobaden to Stockholm. I knew that the added distance would result in fewer and shorter visits to the garden. Therefore I reduced the size of my plot to 50 m2 and concentrated my efforts on scorzonera, kohlrabi, French beans and a few of my other favourites.

In the spring of 2003 I got a new plot in Hammarbyhojden. It is 115 m2 and located close to where I live. It was in a terrible state, but after almost a 100 hours of hard work it looked like this.

All the stones have been removed from the soil. As it later turned out there was a horrible number of wire worms in the soil. Wire worms can damage seedlings terribly, but they have no special preference for vegetables. To provide an alternative diet I allowed plenty of weeds to grow with my vegetables. This approach was fairly successful, but the plot didn't look very pretty.

In 2004 i left plot in Saltsjobaden to concentrate on Hammarbyhojden.
